Be sure to note that this is ONLY THE NEW TESTAMENT! It is not the "Complete" NIV Audio Bible. I am guilty of not reading the fine print. Even the sample I listened to started in Genesis. I was disappointed when I realized my mistake. A $14 mistake! :/
I love David Suchet's voice and the way he reads that is attentive to the content. I appreciate the lack of a sound track. I read from the American NIV which has a few words here and there that are different from the Anglicized NIV sold in the UK though it is not enough to distract.
Faithful listeners take heart. I think this might help.Since every chapter stop (all 260 of them!) represents a chapter in the New Testament numbered consecutively, you can easily navigate to any chapter of any book just by referencing the index below and applying basic math. For Example:Say you wanted to navigate to Romans Chapter 8;The index shows the book of Romans begins at chapter stop #118. In order to go directly to Romans Chapter 8, you would count stop #118 as the first chapter of Romans (Romans 1) and then simply count up 7 more steps to to chapter stop #125 and there you are: The Book of Romans Chapter 8.Here is the basic index I came up with if you would like to copy it:NIV Audio IndexCh. 1-28: Matthew 1-28Ch. 29-44: Mark 1-16Ch. 45-68: Luke 1-24Ch. 69-89: John 1-21Ch. 90-117: Acts 1-28Ch. 118-133: Romans 1-16Ch. 134-149: I Corinthians 1-16Ch. 150-162: II Corinthians 1-13Ch. 163-168: Galatians 1-6Ch. 169-174: Ephesians 1-6Ch. 175-178: Philippians 1-4Ch. 179-182: Colossians 1-4Ch. 183-187: I Thessalonians 1-5Ch. 188-190: II Thessalonians 1-3Ch. 191-196: I Timothy 1-6Ch. 197-200: II Timothy 1-4Ch. 201-203: Titus 1-3Ch. 204-204: PhilemonCh. 205-217: Hebrews 1-13Ch. 218-222: James 1-5Ch. 223-227: I Peter 1-5Ch. 228-230: II Peter 1-3Ch. 231-235: I John 1-5Ch. 236-236: II JohnCh. 237-237: III JohnCh. 238-238: JudeCh. 239-260: Revelation 1-22I admit, the publisher could have included a few simple navigational tools that would have made referencing a particular passage of this version easier, but the job David Suchet does here is absolutely superb! You wouldn't want to overlook it simply on the basis that it lacks the navigational help that is often included with other audio bibles.
I've been waiting for this to arrive on American markets for a long, long, long time! It's here, and I am so excited! David's rich voice, intonation, and enunciation makes sure you can follow along and sense the nuances of scriptural context.I listen to this quite often. And am happy to recommend it to anyone else looking for a good narration of the Bible.
Over the years I have purchased complete, or selective recordings of the Bible. This is better than Lawrence Olivier or Charleston Heston's recordings. This morning I listened to Suchet reading Rachel's death in Genesis: "So Rachel died, and she was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem), and Jacob set up a pillar over her tomb. It is the pillar of Rachel's tomb, which is there to this day." I was deeply moved. Suchet was sorrowful, but not maudlin. Just how did David do it? He's an actor. He was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. He was fortunate to receive training under theatrical director John Barton. Barton believed in carefully examining the printed words to express the proper passion. And David did.
This is an absolutely beautifully voiced rendition. I listen to many audiobooks and know how the narrator can affect the experience. Of course you should try the sample yourself.Caveat: The audio book formats don't match up with the Bible books, but it's not that hard to bookmark the starts of the Books you want to hear.
My family listens to this recording for free on the Bible Gateway website. We have also listened to the dramatized version, and the versions read by Max Maclean or George W. Sarris, but we prefer listening to David Suchet's voice. I decided to purchase the audio Bible as well so that we can listen offline.
Literally, this audio version of the New Testament is changing my life right now. I never knew how impactful it could be to just listen to the word of God. I don’t get distracted like I do when I am reading.
